1: Introduction

Dengue (DENV), a severe risk. Almost half of the population, in urban or semi-urban areas, live with the risk. In Pakistan, the first case has reported in 1994. Later, in 2005 an epidemic trend occurred with high cases. In 2019, the largest number of cases were reported globally.

It is a virus that spread to people through mosquito bites. It causes hemorrhagic fever. The patient faces difficulty in breathing, bleeding from the nose or under the skin. This virus doesn’t spread from person to person.

1 out of 20 people faces the severe symptoms of dengue that cause death. Each year, a large number of people, children die due to dengue fever.

In this article, I have summed up the dengue symptoms, their stages, and treatment.

2: Dengue symptoms

After biting an infected mosquito, the symptoms of dengue can last 4-10 days. World health organization classifies the symptoms into 2 categories.

· Dengue (with or without signs)

· Severe dengue

In the first case, the most common symptom is a high fever (40°C/104°F). The patient suffers from Nausea, vomiting, Rashes, and muscle or joint pains.

These symptoms can last 4-10 days. In the second case, when the fever is dropping (below 38°C/100°F). The warning signs associated with severe dengue can manifest.

Severe dengue symptoms are:

  1. Severe plasma leakage, leading to fluid accumulation with respiratory distress or shock. Plasma leakage, if enough, can lead to shock. Shock usually occurs 4–5 days after symptoms appear. It can manifest by low pulse pressure, cold extremities, rapid weak pulse, and hypotension.

2. About 20–30% of cases of dengue fever progress to shock, and 40–50% of patients who develop shock die.

3. Most deaths in children with dengue are a consequence of dengue shock syndrome.

4. Rarely, dengue hemorrhagic survivors may have residual brain damage secondary to shock.

5. Severe organ impairment (including cardiac, liver: ALT>1000 and CNS: altered consciousness)

6. Severe bleeding.

3: Treatment of dengue fever

There is no special treatment or antibiotic for dengue fever.

  • Patients can take paracetamol or acetaminophen to reduce pain and fever.
  • Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen because they can cause bleeding.
  • The most severe cases need hospitalization. They refer to outpatient departments of hospitals.
  • Take rest as much as you can.
  • Drink plenty of juices and water to prevent dehydration.
  • Visit your doctor till your complete recovery.
  • If you are having a severe type of dengue symptoms then go to a hospital emergency immediately.

4: prevention from dengue

As there is no special treatment for dengue fever. So, there are only precautions you can use to prevent dengue fever. You have to be very cautious about cleanliness.

  • Make efforts to keep down the mosquito population and protect yourself.
  • Use lotions that can keep the mosquitos away.
  • Burn mosquito killer coils daily at your homes.
  • Close the doors and windows all the time.
  • Keep your house clean.
  • Change the water daily from birds and pets’ water dishes.
  • Wear full-sleeved clothes.
  • If you have dengue symptoms call a doctor immediately.
  • Get rid of the places where mosquitos can breed.
  • Prevent yourself from mosquitos, if someone at home is suffering from dengue fever. Because mosquitos that bite the infected person could spread the infection to others.

5: conclusion

In short, dengue fever is not contagious, so it’s not spread from person to person. But you still have to be very careful if your family member is suffering from fever. The mosquitos can spread the infection.
