Water births, C-sections, the dilation phase, the push-up, and the first face-to-face meeting with the mother or a trans person in labor. These are some of the scenes collected in the birth photo contest organized every year by the International Association of Professional Birth Photographers. For the first time, the photo contest includes a subcategory entitled “Adversity and loss”, dedicated to abortions and perinatal deaths.

Joy and pain are some of the emotions that the images evoke. They show scenes of a physiological process, medicalized in some cases, which are usually kept private, be it in a home or hospital birth.
